Tokyo alone has at least 1,000 girl idol groups. Tonight, on some basement stage, someone is debuting โ€” and someone else is graduating.

Then, on February 1, 2026, a group that started out among those 1,000 played a solo show at Tokyo Dome, about four years after its debut โ€” a group made by a Harajuku fashion company. Once you understand the distance between that basement stage and Tokyo Dome, Japanese idols get interesting.

The problem is that there are so many groups. Some end in numbers, some have โ€œzakaโ€ (ๅ‚, โ€œslopeโ€) in the name, some start with an equals (=) or not-equals (โ‰ ) sign โ€” no wonder it is confusing. So here is a map. Japanese girl idols split into eight families, and each one meets its fans in its own way.

A fan waving a pink penlight in the crowd of a basement live house

The one-line summary โ€” Japanese idols sell a story of growth, not a finished product

K-pop idols often train for years and debut as a polished, finished act. Japanese idols tend to do the opposite: they debut while their singing and dancing are still rough, and fans cheer them on as they get better, step by step.

That is why the key word in Japanese idol culture is not โ€œskillโ€ but โ€œoshiโ€ (ๆŽจ). Your favorite member is your โ€œoshi,โ€ and everything you do to support her is โ€œoshikatsu.โ€ Know these two words and you can follow half of all Japanese idol news.

The Japanese girl idol map โ€” eight families

โ‘  The 48 family โ€” the original โ€œidols you can go and meetโ€ (AKB48)

Origin: Started in 2005 in its own theater in Akihabara, Tokyo. The producer is lyricist Yasushi Akimoto.
Core idea: โ€œIdols you can go and meet.โ€ Not stars on TV, but idols you can watch perform almost every day if you go to the theater.
The game changers: handshake-event tickets packed inside CDs, and the โ€œGeneral Electionโ€ where fans vote for who stands at the center. These two changed how the whole Japanese idol industry works.
Now: The group turned 20 in December 2025. It is not as huge as at its peak, but the Akihabara theater is still known as the โ€œholy groundโ€ of Japanese idols.
Korea connection: Members joined the 2018 Koreaโ€“Japan audition show โ€œProduce 48,โ€ which launched a joint Koreaโ€“Japan group.

โ‘ก The Sakamichi family โ€” three sisters named after slopes (Nogizaka46 ยท Sakurazaka46 ยท Hinatazaka46)

Origin: Nogizaka46 launched in 2011 as AKB48โ€™s โ€œofficial rival.โ€ The names come from real slopes (ๅ‚, zaka) in Tokyo.
The three personalities: Nogizaka46 is graceful and elegant, Sakurazaka46 (formerly Keyakizaka46) is all about intense performance, and Hinatazaka46 is bright and friendly.

The biggest news right now: In August 2026 a fourth Sakamichi group, Aobazaka46 (้’่‘‰ๅ‚46), was announced. The twist: it exists for exactly one year. After that, its members are split into Nogizaka46โ€™s 7th generation, Sakurazaka46โ€™s 5th and Hinatazaka46โ€™s 6th โ€” a one-year crossroads leading to three different slopes.
Audition schedule: Applications ran from August 18 to October 8 (ages 12โ€“20). A final in-person review follows on December 20, and a final training camp on December 27โ€“29. No debut date has been announced yet.
๐Ÿ”— Real Sound โ€” Aobazaka46, a one-year group

โ‘ข The Hello! Project family โ€” home of the skilled performers (Morning Musume โ€™26 and more)

Origin: Its root is Morning Musume, born from a TV audition show in 1997. The whole family is called Hello! Project.
Signature: The group name changes with the year โ€” this year it is โ€œMorning Musume โ€™26.โ€ You can tell which yearโ€™s lineup it is just from the name.
Strength: Widely seen as the family with the strongest singing and dancing among Japanese idols. Many fans go to โ€œlisten,โ€ not just to โ€œwatch.โ€
Now: 2026 is a year of change, with a wave of graduations. In March, a new member from the Hello! Project trainee program joined. Constant graduations and new arrivals are exactly how this family has lasted nearly 30 years.
๐Ÿ”— Real Sound โ€” Morning Musume โ€™26 in transition

โ‘ฃ The Stardust family โ€” live shows built on sheer stamina (Momoiro Clover Z and more)

Flagship: Momoiro Clover Z. The family is named after their agency, Stardust.
Style: Acrobatic stages, marathon-length concerts and pro-wrestling-style showmanship. This is the family that broke the idea that idols are only โ€œcute.โ€
Legacy: Each member has her own color, and fans wave penlights in that color. This โ€œmember colorโ€ culture has now spread to almost every Japanese idol group.

โ‘ค The KAWAII LAB. family โ€” the hottest family in Japan right now (FRUITS ZIPPER ยท CUTIE STREET and more)

Origin: An idol project launched on February 14, 2022 by Asobisystem, a company almost synonymous with Harajuku fashion culture. Its slogan: โ€œFrom Harajuku to the world.โ€
Groups: FRUITS ZIPPER, CANDY TUNE, SWEET STEADY, CUTIE STREET, MORE STAR, plus a trainee group.
Milestones: FRUITS ZIPPER went nationwide after their song โ€œWatashi no Ichiban Kawaii Tokoroโ€ (โ€œThe Cutest Part of Meโ€) exploded on TikTok. They appeared on NHKโ€™s year-end Kohaku show in 2025, and on February 1, 2026 they played a solo show at Tokyo Dome โ€” about four years after their debut, with 44 songs across more than three hours. It was their agencyโ€™s first-ever Tokyo Dome.
Why it is hot: They put โ€œkawaiiโ€ front and center with zero embarrassment, and their songs and choreography fit short videos perfectly, so they land instantly with viewers outside Japan too.

โ‘ฅ The =LOVE family โ€” idols created by a former idol (=LOVE ยท โ‰ ME ยท โ‰’JOY)

Origin: It began in 2017 with =LOVE (โ€œEqual Loveโ€), created by former HKT48 member Rino Sashihara as producer. โ‰ ME (โ€œNot Equal Meโ€) and โ‰’JOY (โ€œNearly Equal Joyโ€) followed.
Quirk: Every group name is a math symbol โ€” even Japanese fans first have to search how to read them.
Strength: Because the producer was an idol herself, the lyrics and stages are praised for capturing what idols themselves actually feel.

โ‘ฆ Underground idols โ€” Tokyoโ€™s โ€œ1,000-group economyโ€ in live houses

What it is: Idols who perform mainly in small live houses rather than on TV. In Japan they are also called โ€œlive idols.โ€ โ€œUndergroundโ€ comes from the fact that many venues are in building basements.
Scale: One business outlet conservatively estimated at least 1,000 female underground idol groups in Tokyo alone, forming an economy of roughly ยฅ10 billion.
Where the money comes from: โ€œChekiโ€ โ€” instant photos taken with a member after the show. One session is about ยฅ1,500, of which roughly 30โ€“40% goes to the idol. Many groups earn more than half their revenue from cheki, and some over 90%.
The fun part: Here, 30 seconds of conversation off stage can matter more than three minutes on stage. Say โ€œItโ€™s my first timeโ€ and a member may remember your name next time โ€” which is exactly why it is so hard to stop going once you start.
๐Ÿ”— Business Insider Japan โ€” the cheki economy of underground idols

โ‘ง Koreaโ€“Japan audition groups โ€” Japanese groups made the K-pop way (NiziU ยท ME:I)

NiziU: Born in 2020 from โ€œNizi Project,โ€ an audition run jointly by Koreaโ€™s JYP and Japanโ€™s Sony Music. Japanese members, K-pop training.
ME:I: Chosen through the Japanese girlsโ€™ season of the Korean audition format โ€œProduce 101,โ€ debuting in 2024.
Why it matters: A new family that mixes the Japanese โ€œwatch them growโ€ style with the K-pop โ€œdebut finishedโ€ style. As it grows, the line between Japanese and Korean idols keeps getting blurrier.

One starter song per family โ€” enough to hear the difference

48 family ยท AKB48 โ€œKoisuru Fortune Cookieโ€ (2013) โ€” it became a โ€œnational danceโ€ copied by companies, schools and city halls across Japan.
Sakamichi family ยท Nogizaka46 โ€œInfluencerโ€ (2017) โ€” winner of that yearโ€™s Japan Record Award, famous for its rapid hand choreography. For Sakurazaka46โ€™s roots, try the debut of its predecessor Keyakizaka46, โ€œSilent Majorityโ€ (2016); for Hinatazaka46, their debut โ€œKyunโ€ (2019).
Hello! Project ยท Morning Musume โ€œLOVE Machineโ€ (1999) โ€” the song that got turn-of-the-century Japan dancing, practically this familyโ€™s starting point.
Stardust ยท Momoiro Clover โ€œIkuze! Kaito Shojoโ€ (2010) โ€” the signature song famous for its on-stage backflips.
KAWAII LAB. ยท FRUITS ZIPPER โ€œWatashi no Ichiban Kawaii Tokoroโ€ โ€” the very song that exploded on TikTok.
=LOVE family ยท =LOVE โ€œ=LOVEโ€ (2017) โ€” the debut song that shares the groupโ€™s name, where this family began.
Koreaโ€“Japan auditions ยท NiziU โ€œMake you happyโ€ (2020) โ€” a hit before they had even officially debuted.

โ€œGraduationโ€ โ€” why leaving is not the end in Japanese idol culture

When Japanese idols leave a group, they donโ€™t โ€œquitโ€ โ€” they โ€œgraduate.โ€ Like finishing school, it means completing one chapter and moving on. There is usually a final show or a graduation concert, and fans treat the day as a celebration.
That is why Japanese groups keep their names even as members change. A new โ€œgenerationโ€ fills each spot, and fans start watching a new member grow from the beginning. This cycle is the secret behind Hello! Project lasting nearly 30 years and AKB48 lasting 20. The new one-year group Aobazaka46 can be seen as an experiment that turns this โ€œgenerationโ€ culture into the format of a whole group.

So what does the Japanese idol scene look like in 2026?

A year of generational change: Hello! Project is cycling through graduations and new members, and Sakamichi has launched a new experiment, a one-year group.
New powerhouses: A group made by a Harajuku fashion company, KAWAII LAB., made it all the way to Tokyo Dome โ€” proof that you no longer need a giant TV network or a famous producer; one short video can flip the board.
The base is still huge: Tonight, countless groups will take the stage in Tokyoโ€™s live houses. The Japanese idol industry is held up less by its peak than by this wide base.

Ten words that unlock Japanese idol news

1. Oshi โ€” your favorite member.
2. Oshikatsu โ€” everything you do to support her: merch, shows, even birthday ads.
3. Tan-oshi / Hako-oshi โ€” supporting just one member / supporting the whole group (the โ€œboxโ€).
4. Center โ€” the member standing in the middle of the formation, the โ€œfaceโ€ of that song.
5. Senbatsu โ€” the selection of members for a single. In big groups, not everyone sings every song.
6. Graduation โ€” leaving the group, treated as a day to celebrate.
7. Generation (ki-sei) โ€” members who joined through the same audition, as in โ€œ3rd generation.โ€
8. Tokutenkai โ€” post-show time to meet members directly: handshakes, autographs, photos.
9. Cheki โ€” instant photos with a member, the heart of the underground idol economy.
10. Member color โ€” each memberโ€™s set color; at shows, fans cheer with penlights in that color.

How to see them live โ€” three doors for visitors

Door 1 ยท The summer festival TIF (Tokyo Idol Festival)

One of the worldโ€™s biggest idol festivals, held every summer around Odaiba and Aomi in Tokyo. In 2026 it ran for three days, July 31 to August 2, its 16th edition. 2026 prices were ยฅ11,500 for a one-day pass and ยฅ30,000 for three days. You can see dozens of groups back to back in a single day, which makes it the best โ€œtasting menuโ€ for Japanese idols. Next yearโ€™s dates are usually announced in spring.
๐Ÿ”— TIF 2026 ticket info (Pia)

A fan waving a towel at an outdoor idol festival in Odaiba

Door 2 ยท Live houses (underground idols)

Live houses in Akihabara, Shibuya and Shinjuku host shows almost every day. Many are โ€œtaibanโ€ shows, where several groups perform one after another, so you can see a lot in one night. Many venues charge a drink fee on top of the ticket, and cheki are sometimes cash only, so bring some cash.

A guest paying at a live house entrance and receiving a drink token

Door 3 ยท Dedicated theaters and solo concerts

Groups with their own theater, like AKB48, sell show tickets by lottery on their official site. For big groupsโ€™ solo concerts, the fan-club pre-sale lottery usually comes first. If you are new, find your โ€œoshiโ€ through Door 1 or 2 first, then knock on this one.
๐Ÿ”— AKB48 official site

Three mistakes visitors often make

1. Filming during the show: Most Japanese idol shows ban filming. Only shoot when a โ€œphoto/video OKโ€ segment is announced. Raise your phone like at a K-pop concert and staff will be there in seconds.
2. Ignoring cheki rules: Each group has set rules for time, poses and contact. When time is up, the conversation is over. Read the sign before you queue.
3. Awkward questions: Asking about age, dating or when she plans to graduate is considered bad manners. Talking about the stage โ€” โ€œTodayโ€™s song was great,โ€ โ€œโ—‹โ—‹ is my favorite songโ€ โ€” is always welcome.

Wrapping up โ€” which family will your first โ€œoshiโ€ come from?

Choosing is simple. For singing skill, go Hello! Project. To feel what is hot right now, KAWAII LAB. For stagecraft, Sakamichi. To meet them up close, a live house.

One more thing: Aobazaka46โ€™s final training-camp audition starts on December 27. By this time next year, there will be a new name on this map โ€” and we will unfold it again.

La plus grosse actualitรฉ : en aoรปt 2026, un quatriรจme groupe Sakamichi, Aobazaka46 (้’่‘‰ๅ‚46), a รฉtรฉ annoncรฉ.
Aucune date de dรฉbut nโ€™a encore รฉtรฉ annoncรฉe.
๐Ÿ”— Real Sound โ€” Aobazaka46, groupe limitรฉ ร  un an

๐Ÿ”— Real Sound โ€” Morning Musume โ€™26 en pleine transition

๐Ÿ”— Real Sound โ€” FRUITS ZIPPER au Tokyo Dome (critique)

โ‘ฅ La famille =LOVE โ€” des idoles crรฉรฉes par une ancienne idole (=LOVE ยท โ‰ ME ยท โ‰’JOY)

Puis sont venus โ‰ ME (ยซ Not Equal Me ยป) et โ‰’JOY (ยซ Nearly Equal Joy ยป).

๐Ÿ”— Business Insider Japan โ€” lโ€™รฉconomie des cheki

โ‘ง Les groupes issus dโ€™auditions corรฉano-japonaises โ€” des groupes japonais faรงon K-pop (NiziU ยท ME:I)

Membres japonaises, entraรฎnement K-pop.
ME:I : sรฉlectionnรฉ lors de la saison fรฉminine japonaise du format dโ€™audition corรฉen ยซ Produce 101 ยป, dรฉbuts en 2024.

Stardust ยท Momoiro Clover ยซ Ikuze!
KAWAII LAB. ยท FRUITS ZIPPER ยซ Watashi no Ichiban Kawaii Tokoro ยป โ€” la chanson mรชme qui a explosรฉ sur TikTok.
Auditions corรฉano-japonaises ยท NiziU ยซ Make you happy ยป (2020) โ€” un tube avant mรชme leurs dรฉbuts officiels.

Porte 1 ยท Le festival dโ€™รฉtรฉ TIF (Tokyo Idol Festival)

Porte 2 ยท

Porte 3 ยท Thรฉรขtres dรฉdiรฉs et concerts solo

Asรญ que aquรญ va un mapa.

Muchos fans van a ยซescucharยป, no solo a ยซmirarยป.

โ‘ฃ La familia Stardust: conciertos a pura resistencia (Momoiro Clover Z y mรกs)

Despuรฉs llegaron โ‰ ME (ยซNot Equal Meยป) y โ‰’JOY (ยซNearly Equal Joyยป).

Quรฉ son: idols que actรบan sobre todo en pequeรฑas salas de conciertos mรกs que en televisiรณn.

Stardust ยท Momoiro Clover ยซIkuze! Kaito Shojoยป
Audiciones coreano-japonesas ยท NiziU ยซMake you happyยป (2020): un รฉxito antes incluso de su debut oficial.

ยช generaciรณnยป.

Puerta 1 ยท

ยช ediciรณn durรณ tres dรญas, del 31 de julio al 2 de agosto. Precios 2026: 11.500 yenes el pase de un dรญa y 30.000 yenes el de tres dรญas.

Puerta 2 ยท

Muchos son ยซtaibanยป, donde actรบan varios grupos seguidos, asรญ que ves bastantes en una noche.

Puerta 3 ยท
